New Clint Hill book: Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford by Clint Hill with Lisa McCubbin

New Clint Hill book: Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford by Clint Hill with Lisa McCubbin

"Some of his stunning, never-before-revealed anecdotes include: The torture of watching himself in the Zapruder film in Secret Service training"

NOT drinking the night before would have prevented the torture. Hill, Landis, Ready, Bennett and 5 other agents drank the night before.

This is Hill's FOURTH book (if you count THE KENNEDY DETAIL, which I do- he wrote the Foreword, contributed to the book, did the book tour, the documentary, and many media and in-person events). Cha-ching: Lisa looooooooooooves $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

What I have wrought with my 22-page letter to Hill...wow.

As agent John Norris explained in Bill Sloan’s book J.F.K.: Breaking the Silence and in an interview for Vincent Michael Palamara’s book Survivor’s Guilt: The Secret Service and the Failure to Protect President Kennedy: “Except for George Hickey and Clint Hill, [many of the others] just basically sat there with their thumbs up their butts while the president was gunned down in front of them.” [although Hill was one of the drinkers who went on to profit from the death of JFK]

Behind the Shades: A Female Secret Service Agent's True Story by Sue Ann Baker

Behind the Shades: A Female Secret Service Agent's True Story by Sue Ann Baker

The first women special agents, transferred from Nixon's old Executive Protection Service (later known as the Uniformed Division) of the Secret Service were hired 12/15/71: University of Wisconsin and Milwaukee native Holly Hufschmidt [a nurse in Vietnam, later infiltrated John Kerry's group VVAW]], Beloit College graduate Laurie Anderson from Jersey City, NJ, University of Maryland graduate Phyllis Schantz of Rome, NY [the very first woman Secret Service officer, sworn in 9/15/70], Salt Lake City Utah's Kathryn Clark (originally from Colorado), and present author and Ohio University graduate Sue Baker of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who spent two weeks at a Summer camp in 1971 with JFK's daughter Caroline. Former Kennedy Detail agent Jack Warner told the press on 11/25/71 that the women were "very talented and kinda cute". Former agent Joe Petro has a photo of Hufschmidt in his fine book, the 1990 AFAUSSS book talks briefly about the five women pioneers, the excellent book about agent Charlie Gittens ("Out From The Shadow") has a fair amount of useful background on these trail blazers and even my own book duly mentions their achievement in a footnote, but I digress.

"Behind The Shades" is an excellently written book that is fascinating and informative. No Secret Service historian or history buff should miss this fine volume. 5 stars!

JFK files coming

It was Hunt, shortly before he died in 2007, who claimed that he had been privy to a plot by several CIA affiliates to kill Kennedy — what he referred to as “the Big Event.”
Also under review by the special team of archivists are at least 606 pages about David Atlee Phillips, another CIA officer who won a medal for his role in overthrowing the government of Guatemala in 1954, went on to run operations in Latin America, and along with Hunt played a leading role in anti-Castro activities in Cuba.
Phillips was accused — though never charged — of committing perjury when asked about agency ties to Oswald by the House Select Committee on Assassinations. Phillips, too, late in life attributed the JFK assassination to “rogue” CIA officers.

Joe Clancy now the permanent Secret Service Director- excellent choice!

Joe Clancy now the permanent Secret Service Director- excellent choice!

WASHINGTON — President Obama has decided to appoint Joseph P. Clancy, who has guided the Secret Service on an interim basis for the last four months, to lead the agency permanently, the White House announced Wednesday, 2/18/15...
Mr. Chaffetz said he appreciated “how available Acting Director Clancy has made himself over the past few months” and looked forward to working with him.
Administration officials hope that Mr. Clancy’s appointment can provide some stability at the agency, where five senior executives were demoted in the last month as part of an effort to shake-up the leadership structure and appease critics.
The Secret Service also faces a busy period ahead: Along with protecting the first family and senior government officials, it will oversee the security for a visit by Pope Francis, for the 70th United Nations General Assembly and the beginning of the 2016 presidential campaign.

President Obama has named Joseph Clancy as the new permanent director of the U.S. Secret Service, the White House confirmed Wednesday, defying the recommendation of an independent panel that recommended he look outside the agency.
Clancy, a 27-year veteran of the Secret Service and former special agent in charge of its Presidential Protection Division, took over as temporary director last October after the former director, Julia Pierson, resigned.

Some panel members said Wednesday that Clancy had a good mix of experience inside and outside the agency. "Joe Clancy is deeply respected within the federal law enforcement community. He has served with distinction inside the Secret Service, and he has done well respected work outside the Secret Service too," said Mark Filip, a former federal judge and deputy attorney general in the George W. Bush administration.
Johnson said that he and President Obama considered a number of candidates, "including those who had never been with the Secret Service.''
"Ultimately, Joe Clancy struck the right balance of familiarity with the Secret Service and its missions, respect from within the workforce, and a demonstrated determination to make hard choices and foster needed change,'' Johnson said Wednesday. "I am confident Joe will continue this management approach.''

Clancy formed a relationship with Obama as the head of his protective division before retiring in 2011...
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Obama weighed Clancy's personal attachments within the Secret Service with his ability to make a "cold-eyed assessment" of the agency's problems. He said Clancy's "credibility within the agency" has helped him to implement the recommendations of the independent panel brought in to examine the agency's operations.
Last month, Clancy forced out four senior agency officials after the panel's report found that the Secret Service was "starved for leadership."
