150th anniversary of the Secret Service AND the Lincoln assassination
In what may be one of the biggest coincidences in presidential history, Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating the Secret Service on April 14, 1865, just hours before he was assassinated
No legislation was signed that day creating the USSS. In fact the entire story about Treasury Secretary McColluch discussing the formation of the USSS that day is most probably myth. USSS Authority was cited by treasury solicitor Jordan as stemming from the anti-counterfeiting appropriation of July 2nd, 1864. The myth appears to have been started sometime around 1960 with the publication of "The United States Secret Service" by Bowen & Neal.
